The number of people with post-secondary credentials is expanding. That’s the big news released this week by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
The proportion of young adults between 25- 34 years old with advanced qualifications across the OECD member states reached a record 48% in 2021. In 2000, that number was just 27%. The highest rates of achievement among the young adults were found in Korea at 69.3% and Canada at 66.4%.
The statistics come from a report called Education at a Glance 2022, a publication commissioned by the OECD.
The increase in tertiary (post-secondary) educational attainment was strong among women, who now make up 57% of all tertiary educated people in the age group compared to 43% of men.
“The dramatic rise in educational attainment is providing a unique opportunity to fuel economic and social progress in our countries,” OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann said. “It is essential that countries continue to innovate and improve their education systems to ensure that everyone benefits from the advantages of a good education and acquires the skills they need to succeed.”
If it feels like there are more online programs than ever before, that’s because there are! The shift to online is not going anywhere for higher ed.
“There’s been a tremendous cultural shift post-pandemic for more remote options in both the workplace and higher education,” said Katie Roeher, assistant dean of the School of Business, Aviation and Technology at Pierpont Community and Technical College. “Working students need the flexibility of an online program to complete their educational goals without sacrificing their work and family obligations.”
