EdTech News for Friday, September 23, 2022: Futures Literacy, Hybrid Remains Central to Education Events

Ed-Tech-news

Supporting the development of futures literacy is EdTech’s next big challenge. It’s a truly international effort. According to UNESCO, Futures literacy is the skill of using thinking and imagination to anticipate various opportunities, options, and possibilities that might happen in the future based on our existing knowledge and current reality. In other words, it’s a learned ability that helps people think their way out of bad times.

“We can all undergo training and achieve this competence. As a skill, it is no different from learning to read or write since thinking and imagination are human capabilities,” said Associate Professor Dr. Natcha Thawesaengskulthai, Global Chief Innovation Officer of Thailand’s Chulalongkorn University. “Such skills will enable us to anticipate future events and occurrences to be prepared with the strategies to better deal with them, prioritize, and make the necessary decisions.”

The UNESCO Global Futures Literacy Network is active in institutions in several countries, including Chulalongkorn University, where it houses the CU Innovation Hub and the CU Social Innovation as cross-disciplinary platforms for students and researchers to come together with their creativity to problem-solve using various methods and innovations.

Public school websites are tools parents, students, education workers, and community members rely on to ensure access to taxpayer-funded resources governed by elected officials. Monsido, powered by CivicPlus, a web governance platform, released the 2022 version of their website benchmark for the top 50 largest school districts in the United States. The benchmark report found that school districts lag behind content quality assurance.

The 2022 scan results were compared with the 2021 results.

In 2021, the Content Quality category results showed that most school district websites scored in the “Poor” category. In 2022, the industry benchmark score continued to lag behind and decreased by 6.5 points, scoring even lower in the “Fail” category.

“Websites are a vital information hub for the school community, yet most school communicators have limited time and resources to make updates on their website,” said Josh Ditthardt, Sales Director at Monsido powered by CivicPlus. “We hope this report will help those managing school websites prioritize what updates to make to ensure information is up-to-date, accessible, and deliver a high-quality experience.”

Student mental health is at the fore of all things education, and EdTech is no exception. EdTech company Linewize is hosting an interactive workshop on  September 28 at 11 a.m. PT focused on federal funding grants and frameworks to address and support school staff and student safety.

“Faced with a worsening mental health crisis, we must take immediate action to protect kids and teens nationwide. New federal funding that supports student safety, such as the Safer Communities Act, is a significant step in the right direction, and it’s important for school leaders to have a firm grasp on how it can help,” said Ross Young, executive vice president of Linewize. “Our goal is for all attendees to walk away from this workshop with a deep understanding of how this funding can support their school districts this year.”
