Lifelong Learner to Educator
Katherine Sternlieb is a lifelong learner. This passion for learning and sharing knowledge led her to teach.
“I love psychology, but I am also very interested in education. My love of learning is my strength. I love sharing that knowledge with others. I look to instructors I remember being effective and sharing a passion for learning and teaching. The Babb Group shares that ideal,” Sternlieb said.
Working Non-Traditional Nursing Students
She especially enjoys working with non-traditional students returning to the classroom. Sternlieb explains, “They have knowledge in other areas of life. This is why I love people going back to school later in life to get a nursing degree after jobs and family and living their lives. They are the most fun to teach. They want the knowledge and want to succeed.”
Becoming an Educator
Sternlieb’s resume was full of degrees, but after earning a doctorate in psychology, she realized she needed more. She added a degree in nursing education. Until then, Sternlieb had not done formal teaching but had been teaching nurses on the job, educating patients, and leading trainings for colleagues for years.
Armed with her new credentials, Sternlieb connected with The Babb Group. She started with CV services, where she met COO Sheila Fry. She started getting job leads and landing the positions with her CV. Finally, Fry asked her to be a subject matter expert.
“Sheila is the most positive, upbeat project manager!”
Sternlieb’s dissertation is in the science of positive psychology, and she explains that this mutual positivity keeps her connected to The Babb Group.
Positive Psychology in the Classroom
Sternlieb incorporates positive psychology into all of her work. She shared her experience with a professor in a nursing course who was enthusiastic about the subject and helping students, made himself available, and helped foster students to improve. She uses several practical steps to emphasize positive psychology in her classrooms, including:
- Respect students
- Create a learning atmosphere
- Communication
- Demonstrate subject matter knowledge
- Be accessible
- Examine processes if students are not successful
Sternlieb is a fantastic example of transferring her love of learning to teaching. She credits The Babb Group with giving her the tools to succeed. “Professionalism comes through with everyone I’ve met. Things are done on a timely basis. Everyone has an attitude of being a team player and working together as a group. They got me started! I want them to be more successful.”
